Ben Sasse

United States Senator

According to two people familiar with the Nebraska Republican plans, Ben Sasse is likely to accept the position of

president of the University of Florida and give up his Senate seat in the near future.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts will then nominate Sasse's successor under state law, with seats to be chosen for special elections in 2024.

One familiar with Sasse's plans says Ricketts himself is being considered as a potential candidate for the position.

Given the lengthy university process, the exact timing of his future resignation is not yet known, but is likely to occur later this year.

The University of Florida confirmed Sasse's plans in a press release Thursday, announcing him as the sole finalist for the position.

I think Florida is the most exciting university in America right now."

This time is different because the University of Florida is different:

Sasse said he and his wife "have been chased by amazing institutions for the past two years, but we turned down finalists.
