A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, fully Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, India – 27 July 2015 in Shillong)
Indian scientist and politician who played a major role in the development of India's
missile and nuclear weapons programs. He was the President of India from 2002 to 2007.
Kalam received a degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras
Institute of Technology and joined the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in 1958.
In 1969 he joined the Indian Space Research Organization
where he became project manager for the SLV-III, a launch vehicle.
