In the San Diego Padres’ first home playoff game with fans since 2006, the home team wowed the crowd as the Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1. Victory in Game 3 of the National League Division Series gave the Padres a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. That means the Padres are one win away from eliminating the Dodgers, who have won a franchise-record 111 regular season games.
Padres rookie Blake Snell lost 5 1/3 innings from the ball one way, and the San Diego bullpen continued to put zeros on the board. Offensively, Trent Grisham scored his third home run of the 2022 postseason.
The winner of that series advances to the NLCS to face off against the winners of the Philadelphia Phillies-Atlanta Braves NLDS.
Now on to the food stalls from Game 3.
Tony Gonsolin doesn’t have much to give the Dodgers
Gonsolin missed the track for more than a month with a forearm injury and returned in time to start a shortstop against the Rockies on October 3. He wasn’t himself in Game 3 on Friday night. Command was sorely lacking and Gonsolin’s fastball speed dropped by about a notch (as he did against Colorado last start). He went through the first half with 31 throws and Dave Roberts was hoping to get Andrew Heaney to warm up in that first frame. Things could have been worse in the second set, but Gonsolin escaped disaster, thanks in part to Jurickson Profar Bunt’s failed effort.
Roberts had planned a belt of around 75 throws for Gonsolin in Game 3, but he only managed 42 throws and 1 1/3 innings. During that span, he allowed a run to four strokes with strikeouts and runs. In the first two games of the series, the Dodgers have captured eight relief appearances and eight innings. Even with a day off before Game 3 and a first-half bye, the Los Angeles pens have been improving a few miles lately. This trend continued on Friday.
Bullpen Padres is a hammer
During the first two games of the series, the San Diego bullpen dropped the following figures: 9 1/3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 9 SO, 4 BB. Then, in the decisive Game 3, the same pen was tasked with maintaining a one-time lead for 11 outs – including Nick Martinez in the sixth, leaving runners in goal position with outs. Once again, the San Diego Auxiliary Corps rose to the challenge and did it against one of the best offenses in MLB. Now for this updated number for NLDS: 13 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 15 SO, 4 BB.
Trent Grisham continues his post-season fireworks
Pads midfielder and No. 8 Trent Grisham had a pretty tough but great regular season in the Wild Card Series against the Mets, hitting homers twice in three games. In the first two NLDS games against the Dodgers, Grisham didn’t do much, but he rediscovered his punching power in the first round in the fourth inning of Game 3:
This one by Andrew Heaney leaves the bat at 109.8 mph and travels 389 feet. A third home game after the 2022 season – with just six games played – propelled Grisham into elite franchise society:
At least he has at least two more games to tie or break Jim Leiritz’s record. Most importantly, without Grisham’s October attack, the Padres probably wouldn’t be where they are today.
The Dodgers struggle again with runners in goal position
The Dodgers went empty-handed in a RISP situation for the second day in a row on Friday night. In Game 3 they went RISP 0 for 9, and that means they are now 0 for their last 19 at the spot. Suffice it to say, Dodgers are some well-timed hits from this very different series.
History favors the Padres
Unsurprisingly, the Padres did well with a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. In best five League Division Series history, 67 times teams have led 2-1 in draws, and 49 of those 2-1 teams have won draws. In other words, only 26.9 percent of teams that lost 2-1 in LDS won again, said LDS.
For the Dodgers, the first step against odds and history came in Game 4. Tyler Anderson took Joe Musgrove to Los Angeles and the first game was scheduled for 21:07. ET is back at Petco Park in San Diego. Shortstop Trea Turner could be a game for the Dodgers. He injured his finger in Game 3 jumping back to first base on a pick-off attempt. X-ray results were negative.
